The STOP START Peace Campaign

About the campaign
Stop The Fighting Start The Music (or Stop Start for short) encourages people to use music to spread peace. Initiatives can range from simple and small gatherings in homes, cafes and community venues, to large scale concerts with thousands of participants. The idea is to START making music. The hope is to STOP the fighting, STOP the pain, STOP anything that causes hurt, suffering and destruction to humanity.

How you can participate
1) JOIN other like-minded and peace-hungry fellow world citizens here
2) ORGANISE music-based events with the theme “Stop The Fighting Start The Music”
3) POST your event pictures, videos and testimonies.
4) SPREAD the word. Let’s stop the fighting, and start the music.

How the campaign started
Stop Start is a peace campaign launched by Cafe Diplo in response to the 2008/09 Israel-Gaza conflict. Cafe Diplo founder Jonathan How was replying to one of numerous notes written by Facebook members about the conflict, and had suggested that “when words fail, try music” as he firmly believed in the power of music to quell anger and lessen hate. Jonathan deplores the taking of lives in the name of peace, and decided then that enough is enough, that people should just stop fighting. Period. People ought to realise the sanctity of a human life no matter how insignificant an individual is perceived, and stop the killing. Even if no actual killing is taking place, so long as there is mutual hatred, distrust, and racial prejudice, people ought to endeavour to end animosity towards each other, between communities and among nations. Café Diplo believes that music is an effective tool to help reduce hostilities, and deploys its Peace Ambassadors on Stop-Start projects (like the Grace Music Festival) in both conflict and non-conflict areas around the world to promote peace through music.
